This is only a practice exercise to help prepare you for the lecture/discussion and the first written assignment. If you have difficulty with one, make a note, and move to the next one. Although the questions will be reviewed as part of the lecture/discussion on Friday August 18 (Periods 1 and 3) and Monday August 21 (Periods 2 and 4), you need to attempt all the questions before class. The boldfaced questions involve polyatomic ions. Please attempt the rest of the practice questions in your notes. Some of the questions will be worked worked out in class. The exact date to know all the Formulas and Charges from memory will be discussed in class.Īlso attached is a set of Chemical Nomenclature Practice Questions. Although students will be allowed to use the Formulas and Charges of Common Ions sheet on the first quiz, following the first quiz students will need to start to memorize the Formulas and Charges of Ions. I plan to provide a hard copy of each on the first day of class. In addition to the assigned reading, copies of the Periodic Table that we will use in class and the Formulas and Charges of Common Ions are also attached. A free response quiz will be scheduled after we have discussed and reviewed the information in class and will specifically target the Classification of Matter and Chemical Nomenclature. The reading should be completed by August 21 (Periods 2 and 4) and August 22 (Periods 1 and 3). The Language of Chemistry covers Chemical Nomenclature. The Background Information covers Classification of Matter, Building Blocks of Matter, and the Concept of Energy. The first class assignment is to read both the attached AP Chemistry Background Information and The Language of Chemistry. Also read the Course Details, Curriculum,and Exam Information. The form must be turned in by Friday August 25. Once you have read the syllabus, you need to print and sign the attached Course Syllabus Acknowledgement form.
